Description

Koekerdose snail

Land Snail with a turban-like structure, 40mm in diameter. The shells are surprisingly thick and heavy for a land snail.
Fresh/live snails are purplish on the outside and shiny deep purple on the inside. the samples shown have been bleached white, one retaining some of its colouration.
Predation by Spotted Eagle Owl: broken shells are found at the base of fence poles.
In modern times known to be sought after and eaten. I suspect they were a food source for the SAN people.
Information given by an old farmer of the area (Adriaan Niewould of "Rondawel" on the road between Garies and Groenrivermond).
