What

Lesser Duckweed (Lemna aequinoctialis)

Observer

pjd1

Date

January 3, 2014

Description

Admixed with Isolepis prolifera in raupo (Typha orientalis) / Bolboschoenus - Carex reed/sedgeland. Locally common. The stunning close up images with scale bars are the work of Jeremy R. Rolfe not me -the other crappy images are mine (enjoy). Lemna aequinoctialis is distinguished from the other two Lemna in New Zealand (L. disperma and L. minor) by the lack of reddish pigmentation, acute root tips, distinctly winged root sheath and, adaxially, by the presence of two prominent papillae located at the distal and proximal ends of the frond (de Lange et al. 2014). So far this species has been reliably recorded from Auckland Zoo, Matukureia Swamp and Blue Springs, near Putaruru. It may be naturalised but it is more probably an indigenous recent (or perhaps overlooked) arrival. Vouchers lodged in AK, CHR
