What

Buckley's Oak (Quercus buckleyi)

Observer

gcwarbler

Date

March 30, 2008

Description

This Spanish Oak was apparently struck by lightning within the past day (i.e. probably in a storm on the morning of 3/29); leaves on the damaged branches were barely wilted. The lightning strike blew off the bark all around one trunk of this multi-trunk tree but there was no evidence of a burn scar. That single trunk did not survive the strike but the remainder of the tree was OK.
