Three of these fish were observed foraging in a 5 cm deep layer of water within the mangroves on a rapidly retreating tide. Within twenty minutes their water habitat would become an exposed surface. Crabs had already started to come out. Yet these fish looked untroubled, which suggests that they are resident in this area and do not need to flee with the retreating tide. At about 150 mm long, they are an order of magnitude larger than any of the other fish that are resident in this zone. They were on the inner edge of the Rhizophora mangrove zone, where tall trees have been replaced by low shrubby trees and a diversity of other mangrove species are present. No creeks or deep water refuges were present within 200-400 m. Photo taken at 9:46 pm.
