Seedling / Sapling c.450 mm tall. Kapuka (Griselinia littoralis) is naturally very uncommon in the Auckland Region, where it mostly seen about 650 m a.s.l. in so called 'cloud forest'. However, it is widely planted as a hedge species, even though it usually does poorly in summer, and many plants die drought-stricken (Aucklanders should plant puka (Griselinia lucida) instead). Despite these issues kapuka is begining to naturalize from hedge plantings - this observation is of a single sapling growing in a crack within a footpath near a planted hedge of this species.
