Saxicolous on exposed andesitic rock and cliff faces. Abundant. Plants greyish-green to orange-green when dry. Forming large 'balls' on rock face. Leaves when viewed by microscope with large orange alar cells; a prominent hyaline border running along most of leaf margin. Upper leaf cells isodiametric, thick-walled bearing prominent branched papillae. Voucher to be lodged in AK. Image shows moss growing with Sterocaulon ramulosum
