Very common on coastal cliffs. Shrubs to small trees (up to 6 m tall). This is the race illustrated by Audrey Eagle (1982, 2006) as the "Paratutu Rock" form. It differs from many other variations of C. cotoneaster by its taller 'arborescent' growth habit and larger leaves. This particular race of C. cotoneaster ranges from Paratutu Rock up to about Ahipara, and seems western in its distribution. As usual, we need a decent, modern taxonomic investigation into the variation within this species, as the race illustrated here is simply one of many, many races various people have tried to define as potentially new species using a complex series of tag names.
