Uncommon. Growing amongst karamu (Coprosma robusta), tutu (Coriaria arborea var. arborea), rawiritoa (Kunzea amathicola), rawirinui (K. robusta) and tanguru (Olearia albida) on steep, eroding, Jurassic Mudstone cliffs above road. Leaves mostly simple (very rarely lobed, once or twice) so falling within the morph that many people regard (incorrectly) as diagnostic of S. aviculare var. aviculare. Still flowering (just). Flowers dark purple, rotate, corolla lobes broad, 'ruffled', apex rounded (not acute). Seeds 2.8-3.0 mm diameter. Voucher collected (as this species is scarce (least ways in a natural state which I assume this record to be) in the western Waikato).
