In March 2017 and 2018 the paper wasps arrive shortly before 12 noon on a Saturday, streaming along the long low wooden gate at left, and along the igher fence, with some coming onto the shorter fence and gate in the foreground. After about 2 hours they left.
This happened about the same time several days in a row, perhaps a week, then it tapered off and stopped altogether - just the usual scattered wasps among plants or on fences or the house wall.
Eventually I observed one wasp stationery on one of the low fences, awith another wasp on top of her.
This is paper wasp honeymooning behaviour, I suppose? (cf honeybees, which have honeymooned in tree next door several successive years in the past).

This year it didn't happen until today, perhaps because the drought and/or summer heat lasted longer? Weather has just become cooler in the last week.

Armed with a camera this year, I tried to get photos to see how many wasps were involved and whether there was fighting going on between suitors, as there were sometimes atleast 3 wasps on the same spot, but couldn't catch them with zoom, and every time I got very close I got buzzed and backed off. I know they probably weren't interested in me but I ccouldn't be sure.
