Common Name: Sieve Kelp/Shotgun Kelp
Scientific Name: Agarum clathratum
Location found: Washed up on Canoe Beach in Nahant, MA.
Habitat type: A. clathratum is found from the intertidal to depths of 15 m. It most commonly grows on rock in semi-protected areas. It is found globally, including both coasts of the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans.
Physical description: A. clathratum is a brown algae with a wide midrib and a stipe up to 30 cm long. The distinctive blade has holes scattered throughout its surface.
Fun fact: Reproductive patches of the kelp are called sori and are located towards the edge of the blade.
