First of year, 22 individuals present on freshly-hayed field. Some in winter plumage, some (like this one) actively moulting. Two notes about this sighting: 1. There were two juveniles in the group (see second picture), and we rarely see juveniles - they could easily have been mistaken for a shorebird. 2. Some of the adults were scratching at the ground like sparrows or grouse foraging - see third picture. I have never seen this behavior before in Franklin's Gulls.
