Larger than I have seen before I think, but may be due to the swollen abdomen, which was almost completely blue.
The many maggots are probably being poisoned too, and may be eaten by non-target fauna including tui or blackbirds, (both regularly seen foraging on the ground a few metres away) or insects.
Not having any means of disposal at the Reserve and unwilling to take it home, we merely turned it back over to make the maggots less accessible to invertebrates and birds, and put a little leaf litter over it.
