Description

Drinking from water dish 2m above ground, under trees

The first time I've seen a kereru drinking frm this dish, though they feed a lot in the kawakawa trees in summer, and there is a dish there too.
This one was almost empty, as had been having plenty of rain and no drinkers here (usually its tui, and blackbirds when the tui are not around)

I was worried there was not enough water for a drink (I refilled it as soon as the kereru flew away).

I got a video but blurry: this bird perched there almost without moving for several minutes, looking around from time to time with small movements of the head, listening to other birds squawking in the trees (mynahs perhaps), and eventually took 2 or 3 good long drinks. The movie shows its beak in the water and the crop filling and emptying several times during each drink.

Images 5-10 are in sequence, showing the final look-around before drinking.
