The orange cone marks a nest last observed 2 weeks ago with one adult sitting in long kikuyu. Nearby was a single broken eggshell (chicken's egg sixze, brown speckled, in earlier observation).
just before this adult appeared, I saw what looked from a distance like 3 ducklings - ie fluffy brownish birds running in a line with brief flutters above the ground, with no adult bird in sight. I am guessing they were pukeko chicks, having been called home, or perhaps following an adult I missed seeing.
