Description

I had been turning over fallen Fatsia japonica leaves to photograph the myriad of tiny critters which often lurk between the leaf and wet, mossy ground beneath. (The Fatsia is obviously cultivated, but it is growing adjacent to coniferous forest with an understory of native plants.) On first seeing this harvestman, I actually thought it was a very oversized long-legged mite (Linopodes sp.) as it was using its front legs in a similar probing manner as the mites I had observed on these very same leaves. But, on enlarging my first few images, I was delighted to discover it was a very small opilionid! As I continued to photograph, I considered that it was only a few millimeters in length and would most likely turn out to be a juvenile of some kind. But, I couldn't shake the thought that it sure did have the look of an adult... Needless to say, I was thrilled when I returned home and was able to confirm that it was indeed an adult and identifiable to species! Such a wonderful little creature. I certainly hope to encounter more in the future!
