Description

Today – I observed two (2) Accipiters walking in the neighborhood (on my way to the Wasatch Hollow Nature Preserve. I am suggesting both are Cooper’s Hawk(s) and they have been sighted and observed almost every week in the past month. I think they are showing adult (or first year) plumage in terms of underside (breast) with orange-red barring – and both had dark/cap crowns with pale nape; although eye color was dark, I could not determine exact color (e.g., red). I think that some of the photos indicate a graduated tail feather pattern on the ventral side – with a stepwise look (outer feathers shorter than middle), but I have to say that when perched – it is hard to determine that marker. Proposed Cooper’s Hawk # 2 dove off the branch and came straight down toward me – and the last image shows the wing – as it went right over my head. This is Accipiter (Cooper's) # 1
