According to Powell et al. (2009) the F. hamatacanthus in the area along the Devils River are intergrades between the two subspecies, F. h. hamatacanthus to the west and F. h. sinuatus to the southeast. There is some "twist" in the growth of this cactus, evidence of the sinuatus influence.
