Two Ceanothus, right next to each other, both staying to bloom. They both have the light-stemmed, pointy-twigged appearance of the whitethorns one sees everywhere in the San Gabriels, but here, next to each other they are quite distinct:
On the left, the blossoms are whiter, and the leaves and stems closer in green color.
On the right, the not-yet-open blossoms are a quite vivid dark blue, and there’s a much greater contrast between the leaves and stems, with leaves very dark bluish-green and the stems almost white.
