Exposed during a prescribed burn of a prairie restoration on a xeric sand field. The grass that burned was predominantly big bluestem. I have this narrowed down to prairie vole or meadow vole, my inclination is prairie vole based primarily on the habitat. The other photo of the same individual shows its tail; I understand that can be helpful for distinguishing these two similar species. The animal appeared unharmed by the fire.
