I'm not sure if this is a carpenter ant, but it seemed to resemble it. They like to hide inside dry wood and hollow branches. She is about 12mm long, and I guess she is a queen or fertile worker, since she was alone and went out after a rain.

I have seen them in groups of about 20 to 30 individuals.
