This appears to be the female. There were two medium sized spiders in a single orb web. This, the larger, was near the center, while the thinner, smaller mostly black male was hanging out near the outer part of the web, head down, appearing like it was hanging and perhaps dead (but it wasn't). The two fled the web to a large grass leaf at the side of the trail, and appear together in one of the photos. A series of photos of the male are posted in the adjacent iNat report. I also found a couple more females, somewhat smaller and with different color patterns, within 50 m (see nearby iNat reports).
