Description

I was sitting at my home office computer when a loud "thud" startled me. A young White-winged Dove had flown into the window and, unfortunately, killed itself. This is a rare occurrence for me here, but it occasionally happens. A large number of these doves are in my yard regularly, and sometimes a Cooper's Hawk or something else startles them. Anyway, I took a shot of the dove, but also two shots of the feather down "powder" impression where the dove struck the window. You can clearly see the dove's head, bill, eye, breast feathers, wings, etc. It is an amazing site. If you poke around on the Internet you can find other images like these. One is at:

Anyway, I'm sorry the dove hit the window and died, but at least something of interest can be salvaged and the carcass will go to a Gray Fox this evening.
Note the tail feathers. The one with the whitish tip is an adult feather but the other tail feathers are those of a young bird. This dove was moulting into its first adult plumage, probably been out of the nest just a month or so.
