Very deep root, sometimes longer than the above ground portion. Color deepening in redness the further down the stem. I attempted to locate what the stem was attached to and was unable. Possibly mycorrhizal? Trees close by were oak, maple, witch hazel. One Eastern hemlock about 20 yards away. Sandy soil. Cap very pointy. Hygrophanous.
