Historically conservation efforts have been focused on protecting areas of high conservation value, however these small islands are under threat from the continual invasion of pest species from surrounding areas. In order to see significant biodiversity recovery in New Zealand, restoration projects must be integrated into the daily practice of primary production landscapes to both benefit the environment and business and land owners.
Cape to City aims to see native species co exist with human habitation, food production and recreation at large scales in an agricultural landscape. Hawke's Bay Regional Council, Department of Conservation, Cape Sanctuary, Manaaki-Whenua - Landcare Research and various landowners and businesses are all working together to conduct research, protect habitats, carry out pest control and reintroduce native species.
To become part of this project add your observations and help us monitor its success. Expect to see more native birds such as tui, kakariki and tomtits as well as more skinks, geckos and weta!
