City Nature Challenge 2021:Fort Wayne Area's Journal

May 3, 2021

One more day to collect observations!

You can collect observations until midnight Fort Wayne Area! The challenge is still on, and even though its a little rainy, that only means you might find different wildlife out today than yesterday.

The cool part about the observations? You can go out today and take as many photos of wildlife as you can, and then you have until May 9 to upload and identify them! As long as your observations are made before midnight, they count towards this challenge. Thanks to all who have participated so far, scientists around the world appreciate this important data.

Please email me with any questions: m.russell@lrwp.org

Enjoy your time outdoors!

COMMUNITY MEMBERS UNITE TO FIND URBAN WILDLIFE IN
CITY NATURE CHALLENGE APRIL 30- MAY 3

April 9, 2021– As community science initiatives—which provide a safe way to connect people with nature and each other during the pandemic—continue to grow in popularity, this year’s sixth annual City Nature Challenge is expanding to more than 400 cities across six continents. Beginning on Friday, April 30 at 12:01 am, the Challenge runs through Monday, May 3, 11:59 pm.

With travel restrictions due to the pandemic, scientists more than ever rely on observations from community scientists for important findings. During the 2020 City Nature Challenge, despite the challenges posed by the coronavirus pandemic, participants in Miami spotted an amethyst hairstreak butterfly, a species nearly extirpated from the United States. In Panama, community scientists documented a vibrant—and critically endangered—harlequin frog. And in Washington D.C., participants recorded Arlington County’s first observation of a white-spotted slimy salamander in over 40 years. Over 1,300 endangered, endemic, or data deficient species were recorded during the 2020 City Nature Challenge!

The global event invites people of all ages to observe and submit pictures of wild plants, animals and fungi using the free mobile app iNaturalist. To join in the Challenge, local participants:

  1. Find wildlife: Any wild plant, animal, fungi, slime mold, or any other evidence of life (scat, fur, tracks, shells, carcasses) found anywhere in the seven counties of the project area counts. You may be surprised at what you find in your own backyard, or see from your window!
  2. Take photos of findings using the iNaturalist app, or upload photos from your camera/phone into iNaturalist app or website.
  3. Learn as observations are identified by other iNaturalist users!

Large pools of data built through iNaturalist, natural history museums and science organizations help authorities make informed decisions about conservation. Organizers encourage Hoosiers to participate in their own yards, or local green spaces and local/state parks, while following appropriate social distancing guidelines.

“Every observation counts,” said Maraiah Russell, Preserves and Programs Steward, who is part of the LRWP team spearheading the local effort. “It can be an earthworm, a robin, a squirrel in your yard. You don’t even have to know exactly what you’re observing, because other iNaturalist users will help by making identification suggestions on your photo. It’s a great way for kids to learn about wildlife while at home too!” Participating is easy and free. You just visit inaturalist.org from your browser, or download iNaturalist from the Apple App Store or Google Play store.

Training and event updates!

Trainings Thursday and Saturday this week!
Spring has sprung, and time feels like it's speeding by much faster as the growing season ramps up. This week's upcoming virtual iNaturalist/CNC trainings tonight and Saturday still have room for participants. Join our Zoom sessions (links below) if you are interested in learning how to use iNaturalist, and how to participate in the 2021 Fort Wayne Area City Nature Challenge, our second year! A copy of the training can be emailed to anyone who wants to participate but can't attend.

Anyone using iNaturalist in Allen and surrounding counties between April 30-May 3 are automatically participants in the CNC, and the following 6 days you can continue to identify what you and others have found.

It's just Fort Wayne and Indianapolis representing Indiana this year, so it would be great to expand our reach! It's shaping up to be a great event. We have new partners and unique activities. Sign up on our website/social media pages, or click the links below to register.

Upcoming Virtual CNC Info Meeting

Hello nature fans!

It's time to prepare for our second Fort Wayne Area City Nature Challenge (FWA CNC)! Held in our area for the first time in April 2020, this event proved to be the perfect project for kids needing some hands-on science at home, and for adults needing to connect with nature. Due to Covid-19 challenges, the focus changed from a friendly competition to worldwide collaboration, and the same is true for 2021.
For those partners who participated last year, thank you, and please consider joining us again to create fun and safe events to encourage community participation. If you are new to this project, please find more information and resources below. For new or returning partners, and for any interested individuals we will be holding an info meeting via Zoom in January. Please register below to get the ZOOM link if you'd like to attend, and please share with friends, family, organizations, schools, etc. City Nature Challenge is for everyone!

Fill out our registration form for this free informative event here or email m.russell@lrwp.org:
