The ringtail, also known as ringtail cat, civet cat, or bassarisk, is a nocturnal and omnivorous member of the raccoon family, Procyonidae. Its scientific name, Bassariscus astutus, translates to "cunning little fox". It is an excellent climber and typically associated with rocky areas.
