Colorado Prairie Dog Squad

This project utilizes passionate citizen scientists to mark the current locations and status of prairie dog towns across the Colorado prairie ecosystem.

Grasslands are considered one of the most imperiled biomes around the world, and prairie dogs are considered a keystone species to the North American prairie. With many other prairie species relying directly on them for prey and shelter, or indirectly for the aeration and fertilization their burrowing behavior contributes to the soil, prairie dogs are vital to maintaining the integrity of the North American prairie.

The goal is of this project is to develop a state-wide database of prairie dog abundance and habitat data through iNaturalist that monitors prairie dog towns and raises awareness about this incredible species. Anyone who has access to the internet and prairie dogs in Colorado can be a part of the program!
