Since trying to rewild my 2.5 acre yard I have found that many items I took as organizing or practical for myself as a gardener are actually a draw and for animals and provide interesting and possibly essential microhabitats or structural use for creatures. One of the most surprising is the plotting out of flower beds with stakes and twine to keep out deer. These ropes turn out to be super highways for small invertebrates. Here is my encounter list. My hypothesis is that stringing twine between posts adds valuable structural complexity to a garden in supporting biodiversity. We need to identify ways in which humans can enhance the currently depauperate urban and suburban landscape into something more natural and welcoming to Wildlife. less ↑
