In 2019 Green Mountain College closed, leaving the future of the herbarium in question. The herbarium included thousands of collections by students stretching back to at least the 1950s. On January 22, 2020, a group of botanists from across Vermont came together to review and confirm species IDs.
This iNaturalist project is an attempt to photo document as many of the records as possible to make this data available to anyone interested. The specimens are expected to also be deposited at the University of Vermont Pringle Herbarium. Note that given the lack of time and large number of specimens, at the current time there is only one overall photo per sample. We realize that in some cases the photo may not be sufficient to verify ID, but if anyone is interested we can potentially eventually add diagnostic features to the observations as the specimens will be retained.
Over the next few months (?) Charlie will be adding more observations here using the "not_charlie" account, but it will take a while to get through them all, so if you'd like to help with this let me know! Thans to Sean Beckett for setting up a photo station and taking all these photos!
