World Environment Day Photo-Biodiversity Competition :
June 10th, Location: Beaton
Aim: To encourage local persons to document Grenada’s biodiversity through simple, fun citizen science
Background Information:
World Environment Day will be celebrated worldwide on the 5th of June, 2017. World Environment Day is the United Nations’ most important day for encouraging worldwide awareness and action for the protection of our environment.
The theme for this year is “Connecting People to Nature”. In order to celebrate this as well as World Biodiversity Day which just happened recently as well , the Environment Division of the Ministry of Education, Human Resource Development and the Environment is holding a competition to raise awareness of local biodiversity.
Rules:
Participants will be asked to download the free iNaturalist App (https://www.inaturalist.org/) on their android or iPhones
During the Hash participants will be asked to take pictures using the app of any interesting biodiversity (flora and fauna) that they encounter along the trail.
These photos will be automatically uploaded from the app to The Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF). GBIF is an international open data infrastructure, funded by governments. It allows anyone, anywhere to access data about all types of life on Earth, shared across national boundaries via the Internet.
Persons are asked to focus on one species and not take general landscape pictures. Points will be awarded for clear pictures that can be used to easily identify the species of plant or animal.
Pictures have to be taken on the day, during the hash, along the designated hash trail.
Persons are asked not to stray from the path or spend an inordinate amount of time looking for picture opportunities.
Pictures have to be taken and submitted between 4 pm and 7:00 pm on the day or else will not be eligible.
Persons who do not have a phone or wish to use a dedicated camera may do so but they will be asked to provide the picture at the end of the hash to the Environment Officer present who will upload it via a laptop.
Persons may submit only one picture!
