No problem! I'm so glad that this project exists. Thank you for taking the time to compile these!

The parentage of the "Muscovy x Wood Duck" seems extremely uncertain at the moment

I can't help but think this project has helped to get these two taxa added to iNat. Maybe if we call enough attention to it and users make as many observations of un-added hybrid taxa as they can then even more may get added in the future.

I think I also forgot to post Common Eider x Common Shelduck: https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/92280292

Red-crested x Rosy-billed Pochard: https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/27151381

Posted by liliumtbn about 2 years ago

Both interesting hybrids, but both are certain domestic escapes and don't qualify for the project. Private waterfowl collections produce dozens of odd hybrids that are never seen in nature, and hence don't really require an iNat taxon for them.

Posted by cgbc about 2 years ago

I disagree that they don't require iNat taxa but this is your project so no need to add them if you don't want to. However Common Shelduck x Common Eider likely occur in the wild. Many of the examples I linked in the comments of the observation above are of unknown provenance.

@birdwhisperer Good number of entries here do not have flags; tagging you here instead of flagging them all. Thanks for all the hybrid additions recently!

Chinese x Taiwanese Hwamei is an option available on eBird and supposedly make up a sizeable portion of the Hwamei on Taiwan (but I haven't checked for any observations on iNat)
Red-billed x Taiwanese Blue Magpie, not sure how common it is given the population of Red-billed Blue Magpie on Taiwan is very small and local, but hybrid young have been discovered there before in 2007

Posted by pnwids about 2 years ago

Thanks to everyone (esp. @liliumtbn) in searching for observations that fit for the project, and @birdwhisperer for adding them!

Posted by cgbc about 2 years ago

@birdwhisperer How are you classifying "all eBird accepted hybrids"? iNat is still missing Mottled x Mexican Duck (https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/108096660), Wood Duck x American Wigeon (which I haven't seen photos of on iNat) and I'm sure there's some others. No rush to add them, just curious on what you mean when you say all eBird accepted hybrids are added

Posted by liliumtbn about 2 years ago

@liliumtbn Out of the list above, I've added only the hybrids that appear as options on eBird, except for Northern Flicker X Gilded Flicker because we're trying to figure out if near-species level taxon should be represented in hybrid taxa (ex. Townsend's Warbler x Yellow-rumped Warbler; YRWA was once considered two species and all hybrids between Townsend's is going to be with Audubon's Warblers. Should we lose that recognition just because it's lumped with Myrtle Warbler?).

eBird recognizes Tufted hybridization with both scaup species and I can add both. Imo, the linked hybrid above gives me more Lesser Scaup vibes, but who knows if the community would agree.

Posted by birdwhisperer about 2 years ago

Ah ok. I'm not sure why Mottled x Mexican Duck wasn't added to the list above but it's an option on eBird

I've also added White-crowned x Harris's Sparrow based on some photos I just saw on Facebook. I sent the photographer a message asking to report to iNat, and I created the taxa in case she does.

I'm interested in thoughts on this one. I recorded and sort of photographed a putative juvenile Song x Lincoln's Sparrow. Is it worth adding that hybrid taxa?

https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/124338880

Posted by birdwhisperer almost 2 years ago

Very interesting, just added my 2 cents

Posted by liliumtbn almost 2 years ago

@birdwhisperer I'd say yes since it's a known hybrid and already has a taxon in eBird. https://ebird.org/checklist/S86498709

Posted by cgbc almost 2 years ago

@cgbc I'd hardly call it a "known" hybrid since eBird added Song x Lincoln's in the 2021 update in response to the aforementioned checklist. A quick google search shows that this combo only occurs once in literature and that was a 2003 report, which specifically stated this is first ever recorded combo between the two. They probably occur more often than we think but identification of hybrids is probably pretty tricky.

I've added the Song x Lincoln's hybrid. Whether or not my bird is a hybrid is up to you.

https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/112593300

This is Alabama × black cherry, Prunus alabamensis × serotina.

Unfortunately, there is the added complication here that iNat currently ranks Alabama cherry as a variety of black cherry. This contradicts regional authorities (species rank is regularly given for much less than what separates these taxa). What makes it worse is that iNat used to rank Alabama cherry as species, but reverted it to variety to bring it into alignment with POWO (which is out of date).

Snow x Bar-headed x Swan Goose (Anser caerulescens x indicus x cygnoides)

@liliumtbn iNat has not established a set of rules to deal with trihybrids. I doubt this will ever be implemented.

I also doubt it will be implemented but it fits the criteria for this project

Common Eider x Mallard https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/139099508 See comments for reasoning. There's a very well known individual here and despite the poor photo this appears to be it, albeit in messier plumage due to the time of year. COEI x MALL is an option on eBird. This individual hybrid at the Seahouses is also posted a lot by photographers on Twitter

Posted by liliumtbn 6 months ago

Maybe adding this taxon will encourage more users to upload photos. Surprisingly only one person on eBird uploaded photos of this individual despite the amount of people who have photographed it
