invasive

Invasive species are that group of aliens that invade natural veld.

There are several categories of invasive species. We do not include species in their passive phase. Those are "tame" aliens that do not spread, or do not spread from gardens and cropland.

Invasive species may be in their early phases - in which case, please report them on the project

  • Alien Early Detection & Rapid Response.

Invasive species may spread and take over entire ecosystems. Some are worse than others and alter the ecosystem processes, like water (Gums), fire regimes (many), nutrient cycling (wattles): these are called ecosystem transformers and are the most damaging to natural systems.

Some may be under partial or complete biocontrol. In which case please consider adding to the project

  • Alien Biocontrol.

Is this project for categorised invasives only, or any alien which is locally invasive?

No it does not have to be alien (despite the above: I better change it).

Alien gets the project Alien (s Afr).

This is for invasive species. So those aliens that are also invasive (as opposed to just sitting tight and not spreading - the purists will say into natural veld (but ruderal - into disturbed areas - is OK too)).

And also for those indigenous species that are spreading outside of their natural or historical range, or that are colonizing disturbed or overused habitats.

And, no it does not have to be official. We want to know about invasive species before they become official, or despite their not being official. So please, if it is behaving invasively that is good enough.
