May’s Record of the Month!

Groundhogs are the largest member of the squirrel family in the Great Lakes region. Whether you call them groundhogs, woodchucks, or whistle pigs…these robust rodents are pretty cool. They can be found in most habitats throughout our region – from farm fields to open woodlands to urban lots. May’s Record of the Month celebrates an interesting observation by camelcreek (http://www.inaturalist.org/observations/1568944) of a groundhog hanging out in a tree. Though a speedy retreat to a burrow is their primary defense from predators, groundhogs are known to climb trees to escape danger, or sometimes, to nibble on some twigs and leaves.

Thanks to everyone for your continued contributions!
