This species is known from Lao People's Democratic Republic and Viet Nam. The Lao locality is in the southern part of the Annamite Mountains (Stuart 1999). The species' known localities in Viet Nam are: An Khe (Boun Luoi, Tram Lap) and Krong Pa Districts, Gia Lai Province, Da Lat District (Tuyen Lam), Lam Dong Province (Nguyen et al. 2005), and Kon Plong District, Kon Tum Province (Orlov et al. 2008). The documented elevation range of this species is between 700 and 1100 m Asl (Inger et al. 1999, Orlov et al. 2008). Sympatry with some similar but more widespread species suggests that K. baliogaster may exhist outside of its documented range; further surveys may confirm this (Nguyen et al. 2009).
There are very little population data available for this species, however it is known from six type-specimens (Inger et al. 1999) and was reportedly common at the one known location in Lao People's Democratic Republic (T. Chan-ard pers. comm.).
This pers. comm. was in the original assessment. Can it remain? There is no obvious attatchted doc
It is known from wet evergreen forest. Animals have been found on the banks of forest streams, perched on grassy vegetation 20-50 cm above the surface and about 3 m from the water. Tadpoles were found in a swampy forest pond (Inger, Orlov and Darevsky 1999).
No specific threats have been indicated for the species, but the An Khe District site is known to be impacted by forest clearance for agriculture (Darevsky and Orlov 1997).
The population in Lao People's Democratic Republic is within Xe Sap National Biodiversity Conservation Area. There is a need for improved protection of forest habitats in Viet Nam.
Listed as Vulnerable because its Extent of Occurrence is less than 20,000 km2, its distribution is severely fragmented, and there is continuing decline in the extent and quality of its habitat.
