The Mast Inference and Forecasting (MASTIF) synthesis tracks seed production from crop counts on trees. This synthesis builds on several decades of data collection and analysis by project leaders at universities and government agencies. This expanded synthesis through iNaturalist allows us to analyze masting across a wide range of species and climates. Here are the observation fields:
treeIdentifier: to remember this tree for return counts
stemDiameter/stemCircumference: one or the other is required
cropYear: year when seeds will fall
cropCount: seeds/cones/fruits/pods observed (usually binoculars)
cropFraction: estimate of the total crop represented by cropCount, e.g., 0.3
cropFractionError: estimated error in cropFraction, e.g., 0.1 if cropFraction is believed to be from 0.2 to 0.4
canopyClass: 1 - open grown, 2 - full sun, 3 - partial shade, 4 - mostly shade, 5 - full shade
