This species is distributed throughout much of mainland New Guinea (being possibly absent from south-western New Guinea), the islands of the Bismark Archipelago, and the eastern Indonesian islands of Misool, Salawatti, Seram, central Maluku, Waigo and Gag (O'Shea 1996). The species is found between 500 and 1,500 m asl.
Snakes of this genus typically inhabit lowland rainforest and monsoon rainforest (O'Shea 1996). They also inhabit secondary growth and open areas. In can be found in oil palm and coconut plantations. It is presumably an oviparous species.
There are no known species-specific conservation measures in place, or needed, for this species. This species is presumably present in a number of protected areas.
Aspidomorphus muelleri has been assessed as Least Concern owing to its sizeable distribution and tolerance of a broad range of habitats. No major threats across its full range have been reported.
