This Indonesian endemic inhabits the Digul River drainage system (Papua Province) and the Aru Islands (Maluku Province) (Zug 2004). As few surveys have been conducted in the southern part of Papua Province, it is possible that this species has a wider distribution than is currently known (G. Shea pers. comm. 2008). This species ranges from sea level to at least 1,200 m asl. (Allison unpubl. data).
This species inhabits lowland broadleaved rainforest. Species of this genus thrive in areas of disturbance and regrowth, and bask in sunny patches of forest.
Habitat loss and degradation does occur in the part of Papua in which this species is distributed. However, this is unlikely to be causing declines in the species, since it is not confined to areas of undisturbed forest and can thrive in areas of disturbance and regrowth (G. Shea pers. comm. 2008).
No specific conservation measures are in place for this species. Surveys are recommended to clarify the full distribution of this species.
Carlia diguliensis has been assessed as Least Concern as it has a relatively large range, it occurs in areas subject to disturbance, and there are no major threats acting on it.
