This year's meeting will be held at the Lazy F Camp near Ellensburg, Washington, June 16-19. We will be exploring buckwheats and geology along the eastern face of the Cascade Mountains where the ponderosa pine forests meet the sagebrush.

The Basin and Range National Monument is hosting a Bioblitz in June to gather data about the biodiversity of the monument. Created in 2015, the monument includes elements of both Great Basin and Mojave ecosystems and includes varied terrain of mountains, hills, and valleys. The area has not been extensively surveyed in the past so there are many discoveries waiting to be made.

There will be a group camping area (location TBD) and daily treks with biologists and botanists. The area has no services, the nearest gas, motel, and food is in Alamo to the south. It also has no water sources so be prepared for dry camping.

The Carson Valley monkeyflower has been selected to represent Nevada on the Species At Risk Map, part of NatureServe’s 2019 Annual Report.

Nationally, plants are less likely than animals to receive legal protection, and fewer resources are directed toward their conservation and recovery but in our state, the Nevada Division of Forestry protects our critically endangered plant species through conservation easements, project mitigation, and research at the state nurseries.

As a member of the NatureServe network, the Nevada Division of Natural Heritage (NDNH) contributes biodiversity data that our partners, citizens, and land managers rely on to make sound conservation decisions. Visit NDNH’s website to learn more about Nevada’s unique flora and fauna.

Join scientists, naturalists and conservation professionals at the Pitchfork Ranch unit of the Walker River State Recreation Area on June 8 for a BioBlitz – a communal citizen-science effort to record as many species within a designated location and time period as possible.

This program is aimed to enlist the public in learning more about the species found in Nevada’s newest State Park. Families, students, and individuals are encouraged to partner with a scientist to survey the environment at the park while generating useful data for science and conservation. All minors must be accompanied by an adult. This BioBlitz will use the app iNaturalist to collect data and assemble an inventory of plants and animals. It is advised to have the iNaturalist app installed on a mobile device prior to arrival.

WHAT: Walker River State Recreation Area BioBlitz

WHEN: Saturday, June 8, 8 a.m. – Sunday, June 9, 8 a.m.

WHERE: Walker River State Recreation Area, Pitchfork Ranch. Visitors can check-in at the Visitor Center, 211 E. Walker River Road, Yerington Nevada, 89447. Please note that the E. Walker River Rd. entrance off 208 is the only route to the Visitor Center. Minister Road is currently closed to through traffic and not accessible.

WHO: This event is open to the public. Multiple agencies, non-profit organizations, and students from the University of Nevada, Reno, will be participating and assisting visitors.

COST: The BioBlitz is a free event. Park entrance fees are waived on June 8 for “Discover Nevada State Parks Day.”

The Center for Biological Diversity will seek federal endangered species protection for two rare wildflowers with highly restricted habitats.

The Las Vegas bear poppy (Arctomecon californica) is threatened by gypsum mining,
unmanaged off-highway vehicle recreation, and illegal cattle grazing. The white-margined beardtongue (Penstemon albomarginatus) is threatened by Clark County’s plans to privatize public lands south of Las Vegas for subdivisions and industrial sprawl, as well as other factors.

The Las Vegas bear poppy has fuzzy leaves and delicate yellow flowers. It grows in soils with high gypsum content, primarily on public land surrounding Lake Mead, including in Gold Butte National Monument. It also grows in isolated patches in Arizona.

Penstemon albomarginatus has abundant pink flowers and unique white-fringed leaves and grows in wind-blown sandy soils. It stabilizes low sand dunes known as coppice dunes, which provide nesting and burrowing sites for wildlife. While it grows in isolated populations in California, Arizona, and Nye County, the most robust and essential population grows in and around Clark County’s Hidden Valley, which the county has proposed privatizing for development.

The Nevada Natural Heritage Program collects data on rare species to support the
US Fish and Wildlife Service’s listing process. If you have any sightings of white-margined beardtongue or Las Vegas bear poppy or any other rare plant species, please email Janel Johnson at jdjohnson@heritage.nv.gov. Alternately, photos can be submitted here on iNaturalist where the NNHP collector projects will automatically gather rare plant and animal observations within Nevada.

The 2018 American Penstemon Society Meeting will be near Las Vegas at the Bonnie Springs Ranch, April 27-30. The meeting includes both informational talks about penstemons and field trips to see them in their natural settings. Participants will see both common and rare penstemons including P. albomarginatus, P. ambiguus, P. bicolor subsp. bicolor, P bicolor subsp. roseus, P. eatonii var. eatonii, P. palmeri var. palmeri, P. petiolatus and P. utahensis all in flower in their natural situations.
