Pacific Newt Roadkill: 67 found dead, 4 live ones today

February 26, Tuesday, 9:00-10:00 am, from Limekiln trailhead to Saint Jones trailhead.
Weather: light rain. Temperature: about 15 c
Saw about 12 trucks coming to and from the quarry, a few pickups, such as the SJJJ and County Parks, and a pick up with a large shovel in the front, scraping rocks from the road, and probably newts as well.
Three of the live newts were headed from the lake direction to the mountains, the fourth one was headed the oposite way, but it was injoured, and might have change course because of that.

Wow - you found a lot of dead newts on that short stretch of road! It's so heartbreaking. All the "Newt Crossing" signs aren't helping much, are they? I counted 5 live newts from your pictures. Thanks so much for saving them. Each live one is very precious now. The death count is approaching 3,000 just for this one migration season.
