Our project is simple: we want to partner with the public to collect a small white butterfly -- cabbage white (Pieris rapae) from across its range. Given that it lives just about everywhere, that likely includes your backyard!
The small cabbage white is an invasive species that is an agricultural pest (known to anyone that tries to grow crops in the mustard family). We want to turn this pest into a way to learn about how organisms adapt to changes in their environment, but we need your help.
If you see the small cabbage white, make an observation and if you have a butterfly net, catch it and send it in! Visit pierisproject.org to find out more about what to do with the butterflies you collect. You can also find out more about the research questions we plan to answer with the butterflies you send in, such as how has this species evolved as it invaded many parts of the world over the last century? such as, how has it adapted to changes in climate and other environmental factors?
