We'll be along the mud flats and sand flats, at San Mateo County Parks' Pillar Point Bluffs above the Montara State Reserve, and along the beach and out in the tide pools at Mavericks!
Bring your smartphone and/or a camera, your curiosity and tons of enthusiasm. We’ll rally some experts and folks who know the area. Together we’ll make some great discoveries, get to know these places and each other better!
A Bio-Blitz is an intensive one-day study of biodiversity in a specific location, bringing scientists and volunteer citizen-scientists together. Together, we’ll look for snails, birds, fish, mammals, frogs, sea slugs, butterflies, crabs, insects, spiders, trees, worms, flowers, seaweeds and everything else we can find!
People of all ages and skill levels are welcome! Bring your smart phone for sure. Bonus: camera, binoculars, and magnifying glasses. We’ll enter observations in iNaturalist and join together at the end to find out how many observations we made and how many species we found. Past blitzes in Oakland, San Francisco, and San Mateo have averaged 1000 observations and 200+ species each. Hooray!
Don't have an iNat account yet? No problem!Sign up for an iNaturalist account, then download the app: iPhone, Android.
Brought to you by the California Academy of Sciences, San Mateo County Parks, Sequoia Audubon, Nerds for Nature and iNaturalist.
The fun starts bright and early at 6 AM Sunday at the Pillar Point Parking Lot below the Air Force tower at 300 West Point Ave. in El Granada. Please carpool! We will blitz for four hours and then meet up around 10 AM at Cypress Meadows (343 Cypress Ave, Moss Beach, CA 94038), just a short drive away, to go over our finds!
