Project Bee Watch is a partnership between Point Park University, Allegheny Land Trust and citizen scientists, with the objective of studying the diversity and population status of pollinators, particularly native bees. Citizen scientists are trained to be ambassadors that promote the conservation of pollinators. They attend a training session, after which, they conduct stationary surveys of pollinators at the meadows of Audubon Greenway, an Allegheny Land Trust property located in Sewickley Heights Borough. Each citizen scientist visits Audubon Greenway at least three times during the year to conduct surveys of flowers and bees. The data is then collected and analyzed to assess the conservation status of pollinators. Audubon Greenway is serving as a pilot study in 2018, with a long-term goal of expanding the study to other locations; and including additional partners who will organize their own citizen scientists. By collaborating with other partners, Project Bee Watch will be able to report on the status of pollinators throughout southwestern Pennsylvania.
This project is funded by Point Park University’s Department of Community Engagement and Center for Inclusive Excellence through their Social Impact Grants.
