Over half of the world’s human population lives in urban and suburban environments and that figure is expected to dramatically increase in the not too distant future. As urban sprawl expands into wild lands, there is corresponding growth in areas of research related to human-wildlife interactions and the conservation value of urban habitats. Roads directly affect wildlife populations by reducing habitat and by causing mortality events via vehicular strikes. Our goal is to create a database of road mortality events in Raleigh and the greater Triangle area (NC) to quantify the effects of roads on sensitive urban taxa and make predictions about likely vehicular strikes to implement mitigation as road density increases in a growing urban footprint. less ↑
