Taxonomic notes: The three recognized subspecies are not well-defined (Wagner and Bauer 2011). Reflecting this lack of clarity, Lanza (1990) attributes central and southern Somali records to an unidentified "Agama rueppelli ssp.". Wagner and Bauer (2011) indicate that a review of this species' taxonomy is required.
