Taxonomy

Animalia Chordata Vertebrata Reptilia Squamata Sauria Lacertidae Acanthodactylus Acanthodactylus scutellatus

Taxonomic notes: Harris and Arnold (2000) assert that the subspecies Acanthodactylus scutellatus hardyi is "better regarded as a full species" but provide no justification for this, simply pointing to differences highlighted by Arnold (1986). This recommendation has since been followed by several authors (Refai et al. 2003, Schlüter 2010, Uetz and Hallerman 2012), and unpublished molecular data supports this taxonomic change (P. Geniez pers. comm. 2012). This account therefore treats A. hardyi as a separate species.
