Taxonomy

Animalia Chordata Vertebrata Reptilia Squamata Serpentes Typhlopidae Afrotyphlops Afrotyphlops punctatus

Taxonomic notes: Broadley and Wallach (2009) assigned this species, formerly in Typhlops, to the newly-erected genus Afrotyphlops. There are morphological differences between specimens from the majority of this snake's range, and those from the more humid Basse Casamance (Senegal) and southern Mali, and the status of this form is uncertain (Trape and Mané 2006). Broadley and Wallach (2009) presented a short description of this species, which excluded localities attributed to A. liberiensis , formerly a subspecies of A. punctatus. These authors did not discuss A. liberiensis beyond assigning it to this new genus, so the basis for the implied elevation to species level is unclear. Böhme et al. (2011) describe the taxonomic assignment of "Typhlops liberiensis" as "not yet stable"
