Taxonomy

Animalia Chordata Vertebrata Reptilia Squamata Sauria Agamidae Agama Agama doriae

Taxonomic notes: Two subspecies are presently recognized, and preliminary molecular data indicates that these belong to two distinct lineages that warrant recognition as species: Agama doriae in the Horn of Africa and the Sudans, and A. benueensis for populations from West and Central Africa (Wagner et al. in litt.), as suggested by Moody and Böhme (1984). This account retains the current species concept, in which A. d. benueensis is treated as the western subspecies of A. doriae, pending publication of this revision.
