Addressing the Bagrada Bug Nuisance

As mentioned at the outset, this iNaturalist project has multiple goals, including documenting the spread of the brown marmorated stink bug (Haylomorpha halys). At the same time, the prevalence of other pest species has become more apparent, most notably the introduction from Africa known as bagrada bug (Bagrada hilaris). Based on the frequency of observations in our project, this rather small stinkbug is at least half as common as the very common and widespread native species known as harlequin bug. With bagrada bug as a destructive pest on cruciferous vegetable crops, such as broccoli, steps have been taken to perfect biocontrol methods in hopes of curtailing the pest's numbers and range. You can read more about these approaches in this blog entry: http://ucanr.edu/blogs/blogcore/postdetail.cfm?postnum=9531
