Tribute to BJ Stacey, iNaturalist user 'Finatic'

Nature has lost a great ally. BJ Stacey (iNaturalist user: Finatic) passed away on Feb. 24th after a long battle with cancer. BJ was a prolific contributor to the SLIME project and documented 39 species of native, rare, and introduced taxa. He made an astonishing 105,027 iNaturalist observations and nearly as many identifications. BJ was a tremendously knowledgeable field biologist and a kind and generous colleague. His documentation of biodiversity will enable a better understanding of Southern California biota for many decades to come. BJ will be fondly remembered and profoundly missed.

What a fitting tribute to name a species after him. Kudos to the people who made this possible: https://caseyhrichart.wordpress.com/2021/01/14/a-new-millipede-species-honoring-community-scientist-b-j-stacey/

Sorry to hear this, Jann. He was so active in both observing and identifying that he must have interacted with a very large part of the iNat community -- perhaps posting this as well on the iNat forum would be appropriate.

Finatic was one of the first Inat users I saw who understood the enormous value in what we do. He will certainly be missed.

Such a bummer. I am sad. He was a leader among all Citizen Naturalists. He will be missed. As one that has battled cancer, it's a tough deal. He left behind a legacy and wealth of contributions.
