This species is known from the Mishmi Hills area of north-east India, bordering China, at elevations from 600 to 1600 m a.s.l. Its distribution likely includes the Siang and Lohit river valleys in China.
This species is hunted for its meat but is not specifically targeted by hunters. It is occasionally killed in festivals or ritual hunts. The skins may be preserved.
This species is currently experience negligible declines due to hunting, construction, an increased human population, and shifting agriculture. However, in the future these and other threats, such as the construction of hydroelectric dams, are likely to result in slow and significant declines.
